Under the directive of the Ethiopian Ministry of Mining and Energy, this Opal can only be mined by the local farmers. This opal is found in Wello province Delanta region, around 2700 ft above sea level and 520 km North West of the capital city Addis Ababa. Wello opal is found in volcanic rock, possibly a rhyolite deposits and is described by the Gemology institute of America [GIA], as ‘similar in appearance to opals from Australia or Brazil’. A hydrophane nature is present in more or less degree in most of the material. Most wello Opal goes clear when hydrated but returns to its original state when dry varying from hours to days and sometimes weeks, depending on the humidity.
